The treatments offered by the SASVTC for varicose veins range from simple clinic based treatments to more complex procedures undertaken in the operating theatre environment.
Ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy
A foam is injected into visible lumpy varicose veins, causing the veins to occlude (become blocked), and the veins then disappear after a period of time Clinic based or can be used in conjunction with other procedures performed in the operating theatre.
Thread vein treatment
Thread vein treatment (Microsclerotherapy), is a treatment of fine blue or black thread veins using fine needle injection. Clinic based.
Endovenous Ablation
Radiofrequency Endovenous Ablation is a treatment of the veins most commonly responsible for varicose veins, known as saphenous veins. Endovenous ablation involves passing a small device inside the vein, which heats the inside of the vein, causing it to become blocked. Clinic based in simple cases, or undertaken in the operating theatre when more complex treatment required. Often combined with Phlebectomy and / or sclerotherapy.
Phlebectomy and perforator treatment
Removal of larger visible veins not suitable for treatment by sclerotherapy, or where treatment using sclerotherapy is likely to give an inferior result. The veins are removed through small skin incisions. Undertaken in the operating theatre, with Endovenous Ablation usually being performed at the same time
Truncal vein ligation
Procedures involving tying off of veins, which are undertaken when the more modern techniques are not suitable. Phlebectomy may be undertaken in concert with this. Undertaken in the operating theatre.
